A Tribute on Kazi Nazrul Islam's 127th Birth Anniversary

A bright star in the sky of Bengali literature is Kazi Nazrul Islam. Today is his 127th birthday. This day is not just the birthday of a poet, but it is a day to remember a unique symbol of self-respect, equality, humanity and love of the Bengali nation.

Our national poet was born on May 24, 1899, in the village of Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal. His life was full of diversity—he was a soldier, journalist, lyricist, composer, lover, rebel, humanist and spiritual seeker at the same time. He is like an epic poem in himself.

Through the poem "Rebel", Nazrul lit the fire of a revolution, which fire was the determination to break the chains of subjugation. He said—

"I am the rebel Bhrigu, I burn the world to ashes! I am insane!"
This madness was for the people, for the oppressed, for justice.

Nazrul was not only a poet of rebellion-he was also a poet of love. His songs and poems contain an infinite compassion, heartfelt emotion, and call for humanity. Just as his Islamic ghazals are revered by Muslims, his Shyama Sangeet and devotional songs have also found a place in Hindu society. In his voice, we hear-"Dharma Jar Jar, Utsav Sabhar"-this eternal message.

Nazrul became a beacon of inspiration in the 1971 Liberation War. His song "Chal Chal Chal Chal" was the war song of the freedom fighters. That is why in 1972 he was given the status of the National Poet of Bangladesh and later he was brought back to Bangladesh with respect.

Today, on this day, we should keep Nazrul's ideals and spirit in our hearts. His non-communal spirit, love for humanity, betrayal, and equality are still equally relevant today. When walls of division are built in society, Nazrul's poetry teaches us-

"The song of equality- where all obstacles have become one!"

Our respectful obeisances and deep gratitude on his birthday. Nazrul is the permanent light of our consciousness. The fire of his pen, the melody of his heart, and the freedom of thought will forever show the way to Bengalis.

Nazrul was, is and will always be.

Nazrul Chiranjeev.
